Ozone Kitesurf > News > Chip Wasson>> Namotu Island Fiji

As the season winds down here in San Francisco Bay it is always nice to get away to Fiji for a bit of R & R after a long season of racing.  The ’09 season for me was highly focused on course racing and I did not ride any other board besides my race board all year.  Going to Namotu Island was a chance to catch up and do a few different things.

Namotu Island is a very small Island off of the main Fijian island of Viti Levu and is right next to world famous surf island, Taverua.  Everything that a waterman might like to do is at your fingertips in Namotu.  Beyond the water activities there is great food, and really good drinks.  I would recommend the place to anyone who wants to get away to somewhere different.  My understanding is that Matt is organizing a kite testing trip for all of the Ozone team to get together and “get involved”, Matt?

The highlight of the trip was hands down riding the globally famous wave called Cloud Break.  This insane wave breaks onto a reef that is about 5 miles out in the middle of the ocean.  The wave is steep, powerful, hollow, critical and breaks onto dry reef at it’s finish. Cloud Break is owned by Taverua Island and is off limits unless you are staying on Taverua.

We were fortunate enough to get the OK from the owner of Taverua to ride this spot.  The waves were up to double over head and this wave is like no other wave I have ridden in my life.  It is a left and is a goofy footers paradise.  Of course there is never a photographer peasant when things really come together.

This session will simply have to remain as a vision in my mind. The trip to Namotu caused me to miss two of our Summer season races and moved me from a solid first place in that series to third.  Oh well, the trade off was well worth living the dream for 10 days.

Hopefully more during the Ozone Team trip……Ha, maybe a bit pricy for that reality…….
